Can Silver Sulfadiazine Cream Be Used On Bed Sores?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Oct 2016
Question: Hi! Can I use Silver Sulfadiazine Cream on bed sores instead of zinc oxide for my 87 year old husband's developing bed sore and rash (shearing)? He is in such pain and the Desitin and Balmex doesn't seem to help. I have the SSD cream (1%) from a bad sun burn in 2015 and would like to try it.

Brief Answer:
SSD is a good cream for open wounds

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query about your husband.
To recapitulate: Male/87 - developing bedsore - rash (shearing) - *Pain ++ - Desitin and Balmex seemingly not helping - wants to know whether SSD cream would help - there is ulcer on his heal - hyperbaric treatment ...

As you have mentioned about pain, it indicates that either the skin is alive and not devitalized and/or there is infection deep within.
In such a case no local applications of any ointments work if the skin above is intact.
- I do advise cleaning of such whole area with medical grade spirit as it helps in toughening of the top layers of skin making it less amenable to pressure changes.
This also helps making the area sterile.
- If there is an evidence of infection within, he may need an antibiotic.
- The best way in bedsores is ''prevention''. Waterbed, regular changing of the position of the person helps avoiding building pressure sores.
- Maintaining good hemoglobin and serum proteins also helps a lot.

- Coming to your question:
If there a sore or an open wound SSD is a very good choice. Silver in it has a very good anti-bacterial as well as healing properties.
Just watch out for expiry date is you have it since 2015.

I hope this answers your query and may help in a way for managing the wounds - preventing the bed sores.
