Can Vyvanse Be Taken While Doing Strenuous Exercises?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jul 2015
Question: In the absence of any cardiac history and in the presence of excellent health in a 24 year old athlete, can he safely take Vyvanse while exercising, including strenuous exercise, e.g. crossfit? Alternatively, what kind of work-up would be necessary to make that decision? Are there heart rate limits, etc.?

Brief Answer:
no doctor can confirm "safely"

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although most cardiovascular side effects may present to patients with existent structural heart disease, this drug does increase the risk for arrhythmias, even serious ones. Thus strenuous exercises while using Vyvanse should not be encouraged. An electrocardiogram and ultrasound of the heart (echo) would make sure that your heart is normal but these tests (or any combination of tests) won't reassure your that there is no risk for cardiovascular complications.

The heart rate is normal increased by a few beats per minute. The problem is with the potential for arrhythmias.
