Can A Benign Tumor Become Malignant?

default
Posted on Sat, 29 Mar 2014
Question: My wife, 28 years old, has a benign tumor in her shoulders since her childhood. It had been diagnosed as non-reactive, and she never felt anything. But since past couple of weeks she is feeling a tinging slight pain in the tumor region. It isn't persistent but an on and off thing. Can a benign tumor become malignant? If so, should it pain ? Also she is presently 4.5 months pregnant, can it have an adverse effect on the baby? Kindly advise.

Brief Answer: not malignancy Detailed Answer: It is very, very rare for childhood benign tumors to become malignant. Slight pain can occur if there is mass effect of the tumor on underlying structures. This happens if it is large in size. Pain can also occur if there is bleed into the tumor. Bleed can follow injury. Please recollect if there is injury to that area. All these changes do not have any adverse effects on the baby. In the rare scenario where it becomes malignant, it will start growing in size and will have change in shape and consistency. In such a situation it needs to be excised and sent for biopsy. If it is there for long time, without any change, then you can forget about it. It there are any changes as I said before, please get investigated Take care
