Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,
I am Dr. Neel Kudchadkar and I will help you in these matters.
1. As per your description, she has "Paranoid Schizophrenia".
2. Schizophrenia is a disease of the brain / mind.
3. A schizophrenic female can get pregnant. If and only if her gynaecological organs are healthy, just as any other female.
4. Schizophrenia cannot spread or be transmitted to the baby by breastfeeding.
5. Her husband, mother-in-law, people in contact with her, and even you or
me cannot "catch" schizophrenia, in the sense that people can "catch" AIDS
or "Swine Flu".
6. Schizophrenia is caused due to both genetic and environmental reasons. Genetic means that her parents or grand parents had it. Environmental means that she had childhood and adolescent experiences that caused her to "develop" schizophrenia.
7. After delivering a baby, some women develop a form of "insanity" called post-partum psychosis. This is not schizophrenia at all. It lasts for a maximum of a week, treated or untreated with medicines.
8. I seriously recommend that, you in consultation, with a psychiatrist, kindly give her "Clopixol depot" injections. This injection is to be given once a month in the shoulder. This drug is called Zuclopenthixol. Please do not give her loricon or riscon tablets. They are harsh drugs and have bad side effects.
9. It is difficult to make her swallow such tablets on a regular timetable. And they have to be given daily. You say she picks knifes on a regular basis.
10.Finally your brother is married to her. He wants a normal, healthy, loving wife. Not a violent untreated schizophrenic wife on one hand or a "treated" drugged wife, who is like a vegetable due to harsh drugs and their side effects.
11. The future is bright. For her symptom profile, Clopixol is the best injection. No daily tensions. No violence. No bizarre behaviour. Just calmness and "mostly" normalcy.
Please follow these suggestions. The chance of her child becoming a schizophrenic is mostly vague and remote.
