Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Doctor, I am bipolar since 2000 and getting lithium therapy 1600 mg daily. Each 9-10 months I still have a manic episode, that lasts 3-4 months and is healed by Haldol and Clopixol.
Now I am 32 and willing to become a baby. Can I stop lithium treatment? What to do, if I become manic while pregnancy? Can bipolar have children?
During pregnancy, chances of getting manic episode would be high and in that case, you should take lithium either in very low dose or shift to another drug like haloperidol. Lithium has few teratogenic side effects that could effect new born child. Better to consult your psychiatrist for proper treatment plan and in case, you need further advise, you can ask.
Thanks
