Can Caffeine Cause Blurred Vision?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: I take 50mg (25mg 2x a day) of metoprolol. This morning I drank a very large cup of coffee and my vision became blurry and just off. I couldn't read for about 5-10 minutes. I'm fine now. Wondering if the caffeine and metoprolol contributed to this. It's never happened before until I had the large cup of coffee.

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

Single episodes of such even can happen this might not be due to any relevant cause or it might be two things acting together one increasing heart rate one decreasing.

But in my opinion you should not get anxious about it much. This thing can happen in the morning not related to any particular drug or even, if this repeats itself of gets repeated for a number of time then you need to worry about it.

Some times caffeine can cause undue contraction of cilliary muscles of eye which can cause blurry vision but this is a rare incident , still if that happens again then get a thorogh checkup.

Here I would also suggest you to avoid things which excite heart like coffee caffeimated drinks fizzy drinks etc because using them wiuld cause tachycardia which can end up getting dangerous for you and this also kills the purpose of using a beta blocker for heart rate control. For now dont worry and if that happens again then consult your doctor otherwise there is nothing to be worried about.

I hope this answered you question, a
if you have more please feel free to ask.
