Can Cardiac Rehabilitation Improve Cardiovascular Function In An Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Aug 2016
Question: Hello my dad is 79 years old and had a heart attack 14 days ago. His Dr. found major blockage and decided with my dad to do stents. He was able to do three with good success but the fourth was not possible. Ther was a complication after surgery and from what I understand one of the balloons ruptured and caused liquid to invade the heart sack and caused another major heart attack. They were able to drain liquid form chest but did not think he would make it. He did but only had 10% of heart working. It has increased to 25% as of two days ago. But he breaths hard off and on during sleep and during the day. He can walk short distance and do daily hygiene but says he has no energy. They are saying the next step is reahilabtion in a nursing home facility. How much % of heart function is possible to gain back. And what type of reahilabtion should I be looking for that they should be doing for best results.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. I am sorry to hear about your father. Cardiac rehabilitation is very important and would give chances of improving an ejection fraction by about 30-35% or even higher. Cardiac rehabilitation has definite phases which need to be followed.
