Can Chlamydia Cause Irregular Bleeding?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: Hi there, my partner has been having irregular bleeding not when she has her period. She has had an internal ultrasound and the diagnosis was PCOS and pelvic congestion syndrome. I have been researching these and PCOS can often be misdiagnosed. Is it possible that the cause is an untreated Std like chlamydia that is causing the problems??

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern

ultrasound criteria for diagnosis of pcos is just one criteria required for the diagnosis of pcos. It is not vague but a precise criteria defined as - 12 or more cysts in each ovary or total ovarian volume >10 cu mm
Out of the total 3 proposed rotterdam criteria 2 must be present for diagnosis of pcos i.e
-irregular menses,
-hyperandrogenism i.e acne, hirsutism and frontal hair loss/thinning.
-12 or more cysts in each ovary or total ovarian volume >10 cu mm.
Therefore if she fulfils ultrasound criteria and since she has irregular menses (2 out of 3 criteria), she is pcos.

Ok and an untreated std could not be mistaken for any of these symptoms?

Brief Answer:
An STD wont cause cystic changes of ovary as defined in rotterdam criteria

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I dont think so. An STD wont cause cystic changes on USG though an STD like chlamydia can cause irregular bleeding when it involves the cervix but then if an STD is suspected it can be easily diagnosed or excluded with a cervical or vaginal swab test for chlamydial DNA.
