Can I Take Olmesartan For High BP?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 May 2014
Question: Hi, I am 37 years old male. I was taking Concor 2.5 mg since last 9 years and started concor 5 mg since last 3 months due to increase in BP to 150/100. now my doctor suggest me to stop concor 5 mg and start Olmesartan medoxomil tablets 20mg since no need to take beta blocker for longer time in this age. Please advice can I change this medicine as advice. How effective and safe is the Olmesartan. I am also having resting heart rate around 106 for that doctor advice to take petril beta -20 (clonazepam and propranolol hydrochloride) for 2-3 months.
Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Monitor blood pressure&cardiac frequency...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

To my opinion, the decision for the best treatment will depend on :
- your blood pressure
- cardiac frequency (cf)

Concor is good at lowering your cf, while olmesartan would lower blood pressure with no influence on your cf.

If I was your caring doctor, I would advise to continue taking Concor (according to your cf) and to start an diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide, etc.).

You can discuss it further with your cardiologist as he/she knows better your health situation. Do not forget to keep monitoring your blood pressure and cardiac frequency.

Hope it helped!

hi, Thanks for your advice.
Please note that I was using concor 2.5 since last 9 years and my cf was inthe range of 70 - 90. now since last 7-8 days I have started using olmesartan and cf is in the range of 90 - 110. I am also having some headache and weakness after starting olmesartan, is it normal

1. Is this is because of stopping concor (side effect of stopping) even i am taking other beta blocker petril beta -20 (clonazepam and propranolol hydrochloride) 1/2 two times.
2. Please advice if I continue with Concor, is it safe for using long term, since I already used the same for last 9 years.
3. as per your view which medicine is best and safe (less side effects) in both of them

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Following answers to your queries...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

1. It is normal to get such effects while stopping one medication, as your body is accustomated with that drug. It is not because you stopped concor as you are still taking another betablocker (propanolol).

2. You have been using Concor for 9 years now without having any side effect. So, if I was your caring doctor would prescribe to continue using Concor as it is a beta 1 selective with less side effects.

3. Both of them are considered safe, however, I would prefer Concor as it is a beta 1 selective with less side effects. However, your doctor would give a better judgement after physically checked.

Hope it answered to your questions!

Yes, Concor and Olmesartan are an excellent combination. The side effects (headache and weakness) will be subsided within few days.

Do not get panicked. Everything will be settled. But, time is needed.
