Can I Take Tylenol Or Avdil For Pain After Shoulder Surgery?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Apr 2014
Question: My son just had shoulder surgery and is on the pain medication nucynta 50MG, one to two pills every four to six hours, But the pain meds never last as long as the time he must wait for the next dose. Can he take Avdil or Tylenol in between the doses? I don't want to give him anything that would interact. He's 20, 190lbs and very, very healthy, almost no body fat. He even worked out today on a stationary bike, because health is super important to him and the orthopedic surgeon said he could do that as long as he doesn't use him arm or should in anyway.

Brief Answer: Yes, Advil or Tylenol would be a good addition Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am so sorry to hear about these multiple orthopedic surgeries that he has sustained. I understand how difficult it is to live with pain. I will suggest that he gets Tylenol added as a systematic drug. Pain management often recommends associating a first level pain medication to the second and third level so as to achieve a better pain management. In this light, I will recommend that he gets 1gram of Tylenol every 6hours. I will like that you adjust the interval in such a way that it is always taken 2hours before the nucynta. Also, I will recommend that he takes nucynta every 6hours as well. This would be my proposed plan. Nucynta: 8am 2pm 8pm 2am Tylenol: 6am 12am 6pm 12pm I am certain this would guarantee a better pain control. Please, let him stick to his advice per the orthopedic surgeon. I wish him well with his rugby activities. Please, he should be exercise caution undertaking these XXXXXXX sporting activities as they may cause even more undesirable injuries. I hope this helps. I wish you well and thank you so much for using our services. Feel free to request for more information if need be. Dr. Ivo, MD.
