What Does Central Annular Tear At L5-S1 On MRI Mean?

My father was just diagnosed with this from his MRI: central annular tear at L5-S1 without significant disc protrusion. What does that mean? He is 48, 5 11, 180 lbs. He has had 4 shoulder surgeries and has a 5 lb steel ball in it. He also has chronic chest pains.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

This finding is not concerning and does not need any surgery. It is just indicative of mild degeneration of the intervertebral disc, not indicative of disk herniation. It is not related to the chronic chest pain. It may cause low back pain sometimes. Nothing serious.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
