Can Magnesium Chloride Be Absorbed Transdermally?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Aug 2015
Question: I would like to know if Magnesium chloride can be absorbed transdermally as a preventative medicine to treat calcification of arteries.
There are many recent reports of transdermal absorption of MgCl2 indicate success.
also see links to Transdermal Magnesium Chloride below.

I would like to use this Transdermal method for delivery of supplementary instead of oral Mg.

etc.

So my question - Can MgCl2 be absorbed transdermally?

Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

Magnesium chloride is well absorbed transdermally and there are a lot of studies that confirm this findings. Transdermally absorbed Magnesium has a good effect on local tissue (including skin, muscle, nerves and arteries). These is why transdermal Magnesium is efficient in reducing arterial calcification.

However there aren't enough data to confirm if transdermal absorbed Magnesium Chloride may correct hypomagnesemia (low Magnesium in blood levels).

Hope this was of help!

Thank you Dr. Shehu for your advice.

You say that "Magnesium chloride is well absorbed transdermally and there are a lot of studies that confirm this findings. "

"This is why transdermal Magnesium is efficient in reducing arterial calcification."

BUT..... you then comment that " However there aren't enough data to confirm if transdermal absorbed Magnesium Chloride may correct hypomagnesemia (low Magnesium in blood levels). "

This sounds contradictory...... Please help me understand.

I have researched PubMed and other online Journals and can only find TWO articles indicating transdermal magnesium chloride effects serum levels.
Can you please direct me to the clinical papers you cite?

If transdermal MgCl2 improves arterial calcification why not hypomagnesemia ?

Please help me understand .

best wishes

Brief Answer:
Following detailed explanations...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Let me explain you again in order to avoid miss understanding.

1. As I said above, transdermal Magnesium Chloride is well absorbed through the skin and has a curative effects on skin, muscles, arteries and nerves. So magnesium will have a positive effects locally on reducing arterial calcification.

2. Although transdermal Magnesium Chloride is well absorbed, there's not enough evidence to confirm the fact that transdermal would correct severe hypomagnesemia. Moderate to severe Hypomagnesemia is a common complication in renal failure patient and there's no evidence to recommend transdermal route of administration to treat these patients. Actual recommendation is that transdermal route is efficient only to treat mild hypomagnesemia.

3. My conclusion is that transdermal Magnesium chloride is efficient for reducing periferic arterial calcification and to treat mild hypomagnesemia. It shouldn't be treated for moderate to severe hypomagnesemia conditions. in this case oral and intravenous route are more efficient.

4. My opinion are based on guidelines and medical textbooks and I can't provide an online link for them.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
