Can One Test Positive For Morphine While On Hydrocodone?
Question: MD recently found Morphine trace in urine sample, done due to my taking hydrocodone regularly as aprescription drug. I have not taken anything that might have morphine3 in it. Is there any chnce that the hydrocodone might contain something that would react like morphine?
Brief Answer:
Yes, on some urine screens this would be positive.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
Hydrocodone is an opiate and so is morphine. Both hydrocodone and morphine, when broken down, have the common "metabolite" of hydromorphone. If the morphine screen looks for hydromorphone, then it will test positive for morphine if you have taken hydrocodone.
If there is some legal or occupational concern about the results of this urine test, the next step would be a more accurate but expensive test called gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
Good luck to you. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.
