Can Prolonged Intake Of Doxycycline Cause Edema In Feet And Ankles?

where is mu answer
Consult a physician to exclude serious causes of edema
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for the query. I have read it & understood your concern.
Yes, Doxycycline hyclate is known to cause edema over feet & ankles .. after prolonged use. The feeling of water droplets falling is due to pressure on periferal nerves supplying the skin of the part( periferal nuropathy. )
I don't know how many days have passed after stopping the doxycycline... mostly, if the edema is just a side effect of the drug.. it should disappear in 10 to 15 days ... with normal activities & sufficient water intake .
* But if the edema persists for a longer time one should be aware of
- kidney involvement / aggravation of kidney problem which may be already existing , In this context I would advise for checking urine ( routine & microscopic) & further evaluation & treatment as per need. Please consult your family doctor.
- Health check up for other possible causes of edema feet like joint involvements/ high blood pressure/ weight gain because of diabetes or thyroid problem/ liver problem need to be investigated for as per need, after primary physical examination by a physician.
In short persistent edema feet should be investigated to exclude any concerning cause & treated in time .
I hope, the answer was both informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome,
Thank you.
