Can Yellow Fever Immunization Be Taken When Suffering Fron Tourettes?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Jun 2014
Question: My 24 yr. old daughter has had tourettes since age 9. Her tourettes is under control without meds. Very occasionally she has a tic. My daughter and myself are going to Brazil next month, and the recommendation is to get a yellow fever immunization.
Is she at risk for complications due to the tourettes, if she has the yellow fever shot? Is there any information or research on this?

Brief Answer:
There is possibly no risk of yellow fever vaccine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your daughter's past history of Tourette syndrome (TS) and the fact that her symptoms are under control without medications. In any case, we do not see much symptoms after the age of 21.

Regarding yellow fever vaccine, it is most probably safe for her and there are no risk of complications. This advice is based on personal observations in patients under follow up with various neurologists (including two of my own patients). There is no systematic research available on this topic.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
