![default](/r/images/default.png)
I am a little scared. For the last couple of days I have had a pain in my chest. It comes and goes often and during the pain it is hard for me to breathe. I have had some sinus/allergy stuffiness and congestion prior to this. I also have been coughing a little.
Most days I feel like there is something in my throat. It doesnt
hurt just feels strange.
I have also had back pain behind my shoulder blades that has been linked to my neck. This is where I hold my stress. It has with time decreased. I am mostly concerned with my chest pain
Thanks for writing to us.
From your description, I can think of the following possible conditions:
1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
2. Anxiety neurosis
3. Cardiac condition.
If you feel the chest discomfort is really troublesome, heart problem is in the list of priority and needs to be ruled out. The following investigations are entailed:
1. Troponin -T and CPK-MB
2. ECG in all leads with a rhythm strip in lead 2
3. Echocardiography
4. Tread mill test
5. Thallium scan (Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy)
I suggest you to consult a physician and get the aforementioned tests. If they are normal, then ultrasound upper left abdomen, pancreatic enzymes, upper GI endoscopy may need to be done to rule out any peptic ulcers. Chest xray would also be done to rule out rest of the causes.
These tests will clear all the doubts and help in treating your symptoms.
I hope my answer and recommendations are adequate and helpful. Waiting for your further follow up queries if any.
Regards.

Thanks for writing again.
Frequent chest pains do need to be investigated and properly examined.
If the pain is in the middle of your chest then most likely it is due to GERD.
It should go away with the right treatment and the following lifestyle measures:
1) Try raising the head of your bed about four inches with blocks.
2) It also might help to avoid eating or drinking for two hours before you lie down. Also avoid taking two or three heavy meals. Instead, take regular frequent small meals. Avoid taking tea or coffee prior to bedtime and concentrate more on a healthy diet.
3) To help control the stomach acid, one should not drink alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them, or eat chocolate or spicy or greasy foods. Further, avoid eating any junk food or oily, spicy food. Take a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet consisting more of fruits, salads, soups and raw vegetables (after proper washing). Also increase the protein content in your diet instead of carbohydrates and fats. An advice from a dietitian will be helpful.
4) Also take some antacid but if the symptoms are severe, then you may need drugs like proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole after consulting your doctor.
Wishing you an early recovery.
Regards.
