Question: My Sister was recently diagnosed with RA. She has many health problems including heart, lungs, asthma, COPD, PTSS. Is alergic to aspirin, penacillen, sulfa drug, iodine and many food allergies including shell fish. She is currently taking tylenol with codine for pain from a car accident injury, she is on many medications including anti-depressants. She is very limited to what she can take for pain due to side effects of shortness of breath. The pain is very severe and we are trying to figure out what she could take and not cause additional problems? I try to read up on the side effects for her she has no computer. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis is often severe and debilitating.
Arthritis requires expert care with various disease modifying drugs (Imunomodulators). She can start these drugs after discussing with a rheumatologist.

I would like to give some diet tips which might be helpful to get rid of these pains. Often the elimination of certain foods such as the following will help greatly:

Dairy products, with the exception of plain yogurt with active culture
Citrus, with the exception of lemon and grapefruit
Alcohol
Meat including beef, pork, and lamb (other sources of protein such as chicken, fish and beans are less likely to promote inflammation)
Vegetable oils (continue using olive oil and the essential fatty acids flax seed, sesame, pumpkin, sunflower oils)

I would also like to give some advice to make the life better and to fight with these pains-

Do regular physiotherapy of joints.
Hot fomentation to decrease the joint stiffness
Hot bath of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate)-Magnesium has both anti-inflammatory and anti- arthritic properties and it can be absorbed through the skin.
She can try gaultheria oil or oil of winter green,so many patients of mine are telling they are relieved of pain with that.

She has to apply the oil on the area that has pain.

Increasing the dietary fish intake and/or fish oil capsules (omega-3 capsules) can also sometimes reduce the inflammation .

I hope this answers your query.
