Do Prolent And Monolaurin Affect Sleep Patterns?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: My doctor has prescribed Prolent and Monolaurin after doing extensive blood work in which my GABA was found to be at low levels. The thought was to help with my insomnia. Since starting these two supplements, my sleep is actually worse (from 6 hours down to 4-5 hours at a time and then unable to go back to sleep). My question is do these two supplements sometime have these side effects and does one have it more than the other? Should I stop taking them?

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Those products you mention are both food supplements so they are both regarded as safe with few side effects.
While Prolent is supposed to influence neurotransmitters, Monolaurin is an antimicrobial product, to boost immune system, so it should have no effect on neurotransmitters and no influence on sleep (whether for the better or the worse).
Prolent on the other hand can influence neurotransmission, is thought to increase serotonin function. Now that usually is associated with less anxiety and sleep improvement, but it is not always that clear cut. That is because serotonin action can be on different receptors in the brain, with different effect among the receptor types, so the final outcome depend on a very fragile balance between neurotransmitter and receptor types. So in some patients it is known to increase anxiety at times and affect sleep for the worse. Usually though that is at the start of the treatment period and over the following weeks the antianxiety effect predominates. So you can interrupt Prolent now if you can't tolerate it, or may hang on for a couple of weeks if symptoms not too bothersome, as often patients feel better in time. If even after a couple of weeks feel the same then naturally should stop.
