Do Bicep Tears Require Surgery?
Question: I have a partial bicep tear at the distel tendon, confirmed by MRI. I am very active and work construction with heavy labor. Is surgery required for full recovery. The doctor I saw says the tendon will heal and reattach itself without surgery, is that true? Is surgery ever needed for a partial tear? Can I really heal without surgery?
Brief Answer:
Yes you can
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
Surgery in biceps tendon tear is indicated only when there is complete rupture or almost complete rupture- it means more than 80% of muscle or tendon fibers. In this case you would it be able to use arm flexion at all. Surgery is done by suturing tendon and approximating its fibers. So majority of tendons are treated conservatively and results are very good in young patients. You need just good physical rehabilitation after it heals in 4-6 weeks.
Wish you good health.
