Does Bromocriptine Cause Hemorrhaging And Headaches?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor and after MRI and blood exam showing high levels of prolactin. The doctor prescribed me with bromocriptine 2.5mg a day for two weeks the to 5. Then when I went up to 10, after the second night of taking it I woke up with a severe headache as if my head was going to explode..or something being pulled really hard. It was horrible. I tried to sleep it off but about 30 mins later I had another severe hit. I ended up going to the ER where they performed a CT and Lumbar puncture. They said the test came out good, but i might get a side effect from the lumbar. I did it was a bad headache and a feeling imbalance. I went back they did a blood patch and that headache went away but my original headache came back so I was sent to get an MRI and was told that everything look fine...no sign of possible stroke or other issues. I was told to stop the bromocriptine and go to cabergoline but had other side effects from that that I was uncomfortable so the doctor decided to put me back on the bromocriptine....But I have this fear of taking it. The headache was so severe that I am spooked. I read online that bromocriptine can lead to hemorrhaging or other potential fatal issues. When I was on the 2.5 and 5 I had no headaches. But once I was put on 10 its when it started. So my question is if I go with the doctors prescribed method of only going up to 5 will I still be at risk of those headaches and potential issues that come from that. THank you in advance for any advice given

Brief Answer: Just headache Detailed Answer: Dear i am sorry for the symptoms you are suffering. Anyway you should understand that your big problem is the tumor and it clinical symptoms which is hyperprolactinemia. So it is needed that bromcriptin is taken with the right dosage. It may provoke headache and it is a boring symptom but it isn't risky and not permanent. It will go way after some days of taking it(probably4-7days) Dear I know you are scared but you have done the right examination and are taking the right medication so you don't have to worry to much. You should absolutely take bromcriptin 10 mg as you were told to dominate hyperprolactinemia. Hope my answer helps you, don't hesitate to contact me for further questions. I took the pills for at least two months with no headaches. it wasent till i got to 10 that they started. But Now I am concerned that smaller doses will hurt me. thanks for your help
