Does Levothyroxine Cause Side Effects During Pregnancy?
Question: while waiting for my financial support for ivf in the US this February , i found out i was pregnant, which is just 2months to my return to the fertility clinic. I am happy and also concerned too, because before now i have been placed on Levothyroxine 50mg daily to correct under active thyroid gland.
Iam about 7wks gone now, is it safe for me to continue the medication? hope no effect on the baby?

Brief Answer:
Safe, and in fact, important to take it.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Congratulations , first of all !
Of course, it is safe for you to continue the medication.
In fact, get a Thyroid hormone test done at the earliest, in pregnancy, the levothyroxine requirements increase.
So you might need to increase your dosage.
Please dont worry, levothyroxine is perfectly safe during pregnancy, and an important medication to take in fact, as an under active thyroid is more likely to harm your baby.
All the best
