default
Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: Two part question:
I'm a college student diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Currently taking 4 apriso capsules each morning.
1. Will smoking marijuana have any interaction with the meds I'm currently taking?
2. Is alcohol dangerous to consume on this medication?

Brief Answer:
Hello

Detailed Answer:

Hi
Thank you for the query.
1)
There is overwhelming epidemiological evidence that smoking protects against ulcerative colitis, the risk of developing the disease being significantly lower in smokers than non smokers. It is not known to prevent relapses once the disease has developed. Also there are multiple better medications to control the disease thank smoking which has multiple other deadly side effects.
So I suggest you to quit smoking marijuana.

2)
Regarding alcohol there is no study to suggest abnormal effects of it on medications or drug interactions.
So alcohol in moderation (may be twice a week ) may be ok.

Hope this answers your query.
Best wishes.

Thank you for your reply! I understand what you are saying about smoking, but would you say a college brownie would be more suitable? I'm not a smoker to begin with, I'm concerned about the chances that marijuana would interact with the medication I'm already taking. Im in remission and the current medication I am taking is apriso, which is mesalamine

Hello

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for the query.
Well what I can recommend you is evidence based medicine only.
There is no special contraindication or drug interactions documented with brownies or marijuana either.
I guess your disease is well controlled with mesalamine so that is good.
Marijuana is otherwise not good for health so I suggested to avoid it.
Hope this answers your query.
best wishes.
