Does Nitrostat Lower BP?

Can lower BP; cannot say how much; few minutes
Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.
Thank you for writing to us.
Nitrostat contains the active ingredient nitroglycerin which has an effect on blood vessels resulting in their dilation.
The main purpose of this medication is in the use of treatment of angina (chest pain) and in the prevention of cardiac events. By dilating the blood vessels this medication reduces the flow of blood, thus reducing the pressure on the heart, which in turn helps it relax and prevents major cardiac events (eg. myocardial infarction).
I would not say this medication is used to treat blood pressure, but it does reduce the blood pressure to a certain extent, say 10-20 mm Hg (systolic or diastolic). This is only an approximate estimation, and can very easily vary from person to person and from one circumstance to another.
As for the elimination and effect of this drug; it is very quickly eliminated from the body, staying in the body for only a few minutes (not even an hour). Its peak value is reached at about 6-7 minutes, and from there the concentration of the medication gradually drops and completely stops within the hour.
So the effect of the medication, whether on the heart or blood pressure would last only a few minutes with one dose of 0.4 mg.
I hope I have successfully addressed your queries sir. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.
Best wishes.
