Does Nytol Interact With Contraceptive Implant?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Nov 2015
Question: Hi. I've been having trouble sleeping for about 5 years. I've been prescribed and recommended multiple treatments but I've been refused stronger things like Nytol. I have the contraceptive implant. Would over-the-counter sleeping aid affect this?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks very much for your question.

I'm sorry you're having sleeping issues. That can be very tough and disruptive. I'd be happy to talk through your history and recommend something if you're interested.

However, to answer your question directly, over the counter sleep aids (such as melatonin, among other things) should have no effect whatsoever on your contraceptive implant. Certain psychiatric medications (Topamax, Tegretol) can decrease the level of estrogen in such implants, but over the counter sleep aids should be nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your help. If you don't mind, I have another question for you; when I was young I had some bladder issues. I can't remember the details now but they went away and left me with a weak bladder. About 3 years ago I started bed-wetting and it happens on a fairly regular basis. Is there any treatments or medication I could get for this?

No problem at all!

There are a couple treatments for this, yes. First, you need your urine tested for infection, as chronic infection can cause this. I also recommend seeing a urologist who can perform a urodynamic study. This can determine the type of incontinence you are having. If it is stress incontinence, you may need a surgical procedure called a urethral sling that can improve it. Sometimes, incontinence can also be treated with imipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant.
