
Does Oxycodone Interact With Antidepressants?

Question: I see my familey doctor regaulrey. I get pain medicine for a back injury. Oxycodone 15 mg.I have been diagnosed and treated for depression. I think I need a anti deppresent. Will my doctor stop giveing me my pain medicine If I ask for prozac

I can understand your concern. It is ok to take an antidepressant and opiate. There is some association in the pharmacological literature that SSRI antidepressants and opiates together can excessively increase serotonin levels (serotonin syndrome), which occurs rarely - but we often give this combination. There are other classes of antidepressants as well.
You may find, after taking an antidepressant for several months, that you need less of the oxycodone.
However, I don't think your doctor will automatically want to discontinue the oxycodone because you also need an antidepressant.
