Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: Hi there,
I had unprotected sex and took postinor the next day. Period came a week later (which is when it was due). That was two weeks ago. Now have tender beats and anxious re pregnancy. Went to GP yesterday for sti checks and preg test. Test was definitely negative but she said it may be too soon to know as sex was three weeks ago.

Does postinor cause breast tenderness?

Period is due again in 9 days

you are not pregnant...explained...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
if you have got a withdrawal bleed within 7 days post positron intake , then pregnancy is unlikely from that intercourse, intact chances are negligible.

But yes, positron which is a high dose progesterone can not only cause irregularity in menses but also sometimes early natural progesterone withdrawal as well.

As your bleeding was 2 weeks ago so your fresh LMP becomes the date of withdrawal bleeding and ideally you should be on start of third week day 15-16 of your fresh cycle which corresponds to the ovulation period as well. Similar progesterone increase in the mid cycle is often accompanied by lower abdominal pain and even sore breasts sometimes.
So it is advisable that you should use hot fomentation to soothe the tenderness.

Thank you for such a prompt response. Should I redo pregnancy test in few weeks to be sure then?

Thanks for the follow up,

If you are skeptical in any ways and would really like to allay your anxiety with regards to pregnancy then you need not wait for another week at all but you can opt for a serum beta hcg test, which is to be done 7 days after the last intercourse.
If the hcg levels in the blood are more than 1ng/dl and raised that indicates a positive test and that you are pregnant. But if the test is negative and the levels are less than 1 then you are for sure not pregnant.
This is the simplest way to rule out pregnancy in your case as of now and this test if 98 percent sensitive and specific, much more than urine pregnancy test.
