Brief Answer:
Postinor can cause irregular hormone levels and periods

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Postinor-2, or other emergency contraceptive (EC) medications, contain a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is normally produced in the second half of the menstrual cycle and is responsible for typical premenstrual symptoms in women like breast tenderness, bloating and mood changes.

Most women get some bleeding 3-5 days after taking EC, which is not your real period, but a withdrawal from the medication. You are likely experiencing symptoms related to your real period, which has not started yet. You used the kit twice, so your real cycle could be delayed. Or, much less likely if you has bleeding after the medication, you could be pregnant, as EC works about 85 percent of the time if taken in the first 24 hours after unprotected sex, and less so if more time has gone by.

I suggest you do a pregnancy test (just in case) if a month has gone by since you had a real period (before taking the medication). If you are not pregnant, you likely will get a real period soon and then these symptoms will disappear.

So in summary, it is not unusual to have irregular periods and hormonal symptoms when you take EC. Breast pain can be managed by decreasing salt and caffeine intake and wearing a tight sports bra. Once you get your next period, I am sure your hormone levels will go back to normal and you will not feel this way anymore.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question and that my advice was helpful. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes, and I hope you feel better, Dr. Brown
