Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: My husband has been on Xarelto since March 3 and on March 5 he got gout. He has been fighting the gout with the help of his doctor. For the second time he is on Predisone (steriods) to try and knock it out. Its not helping, it just recurrs over and over. I believe this is from the Xarelto. I think we should change it. Brief Answer:
xarelto is not supposed to cause gout

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

xarelto is not supposed to cause gout or at least there is no such - documented - side effect. You can try changing xarelto to see what happens. Either coumarin anticoagulants or other factor Xa inhibitors can be used. You should consult your doctor for that.

Please take into account the recurring nature of gout. Sometimes it's difficult to control it. It does not have to be xarelto...

I have found different health sites that given reports on xarelto and gout and they have low cases that have found gout in patients. I just have a hard time to believe that for a good year or more my husband never had gout and he gets it the second day after starting Xarelto. He was taking colchicine but it upsets his stomach so bad that they had to take him off of it. Now he has to take Pantoprazole and Metonia for his stomach. He takes Tramadol for pain And it never really helped. With everything he is taking Gout seems to be the big guy we have to deal with. I just feel if we changed the Xarelto to something else, it may make the defference of him getting better.

Detailed Answer:
I understand...

You can try to change xarelto. Remember to do so after consulting your doctor for detailed instructions. I can't totally exclude a side effect but it's not a documented one, which means that it's either very rare or non-existent!

A careful review of all his medications and diet might help to detect potential factors for gout. If nothing can be detected by your doctor then you can go ahead and substitute xarelto. Perhaps trying a low molecular weight heparin for some time might help to see if gout attacks continue. And if they come back after restarting it.

Kind Regards!
