Does A Swelling Ankle From Being Placed In A Bivalve Cast Require Consultation?
Question: I have a closed reduction partial break in my fibula just above my ankle. Ankle was put in fiberglass cast on August 17th. On August 22nd; followup x ray showed all was good. Next follow up is Sept 14th. However; I have been over come with cast claustrophobia and just coudn't stand having foot locked in. Cast was given single cut on one side for flying, but still drove me crazy. On Aug 26th I made into a bivalve cast (carefully and successfully). Have been dealing with increased swelling ever since and now am concerned I may have compromised my recovery. I have been diligently NWB and kept cast on at all times (bound with velcro). I open the top of cast evenings when resting to alleviate swelling. Will this still recover properly or should I get a follow up assessment of awelling issues?
Brief Answer:
Reassessment is required.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, I am Dr.Gopal Goel, Orthopedic Surgeon.
In my view cast should be kept for the required period to allow the fracture to heal. Unfortunately, Bivalving the cast leaves enough room for swelling to appear.
In your case, I would suggest a visit to your orthopedic surgeon for a reassessment of your fracture with repeat X-ray and need for any other intervention.
Thanks for the question. Please feel free to ask any other question.
