Does Arthritis Cause Severe Body Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Sep 2017
Question: Hello doctor! This question is for a friend of mine who lives in another country. Are there any recent advances in chronic pain management connected with arthritis, coming particularly out of XXXXXXX or Chinese medicine? (I'm probing for developments that do not entail taking new high-priced manufactured pharmaceuticals.) My friend, who is in his low 60s, is having bad pain at the knee and above, which he says is arthritic pain connected with a bad hit that he received in that area when he was much younger. The pain flares up occasionally over a series of months in a warm climate (he lives in the tropics) but fairly consistently when he is in a cold climate (he visits North XXXXXXX in the winter). Unfortunately, that is the only background information I have. In the Caribbean and North XXXXXXX there seems to be increasing talk about the use of medical marijuana as a source of consistent but modest relief from chronic pain. Do you have any comments on this approach? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
His pain needs to be well evaluated and managed!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain that you friend has been experiencing over such a long time. The truth is that there is no single pain medication that works just ideal for everyone. The secrete to good pain management is to work closely with the treating doctors. This always allows for an initial plan to be put in place and evaluated thereafter.

If the pain is not well managed, new medications/dosages/combinations would be tried until we find what works best for you.

Truth is that marijuana has proven to be helpful but not in all cases for pain management. She will still need to be tried on this to see if she responds well for it to be recommended long term.

In all, pain management is individualized and adapted to meet the need of each patient. If she were here, it would have been best to establish care at a pain clinic. I will recommend she does this wherever she's.

I hope this guides and helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.
