What Is The Treatment For The Severe Back Pain After 2 Invasive Back Surgeries?

OK! I am a 74 year old person who has had 2 invasive back surgeries. They put a titanium cage, with rods and screws in August of 2005, then again a surgery to fix a part on the right side. This was in August, 2007. I have had this chronic pain for 10 years, and everything tried, such as epidurals, Ablations, Rhizotomies, and doctors who want to go back in and remove the metal. I have severe pain and found out they are giving me 5mg of Oxycodone/Acetaminophen 5-325 mg. I have also found out about the serious side effects of Acetamophens as I was taken last Oct. 2012 to ER where they cauterized a bleeding ulcer and did a great job. What I m getting to is I read about the new Zohydro ER prescription and don t know where to find it here in Pueblo, CO. It s just that I m so sick and tired of being in this severe, chronic pain. It is always with me and Doctors are afraid to give me more than 3 a day which doesn t cut it. Can you advise me where to go from here? Your professionall input could would be most promising now. Thanks, Joel M. Christie.

Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

It is a long acting opiate. and opiate addiction treatment is rather more careful about prescribing and considerably higher doses are used.

Several other points. Acetaminophen does not cause ulcers except due to a big pill bouncing around in the stomach. Issues about addiction would include but are not limited to, needing more and more seeking more and more, needing a higher dose to get the same effect and being sick if not taking it, taking it for emotional reasons, taking opiates for fun. doing something other than what is prescribed, use with other drugs that are dangerous with it.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
