Does Common Vision Problems In Kids Require Glasses?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Mar 2015
Question: My 5 year old had an eye exam by a pediatric eye doctor. They said he has 20/40 vision, farsighted. I was given a very strong prescription for him to wear glasses all day. I have read though, that it is not uncommon for kids his age to have this type of vision and it can be expected in development. In his every day activities he doesn't appear to struggle with sight at all. Just yesterday he put a necklace on his sibling without a problem and did it rather fast. He doesn't have any issues in preschool either with learning/reading/etc. Should he really have glasses? I am concerned that if he truly would not need them and then I give him the glasses, his eyes may not correct on their own, therefore setting him up for needing glasses the rest of his life when it may have been avoided.

Brief Answer:
He is having refractive error and requires glasses.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that your 5year old is having refractive error and your paediatric eye doctor has prescribed glasses.
I can understand your concern. But no need to be worried as refractive error is a common problem seen in children.
This refractive error will change and may increase or decrease in children as the eye ball increases in size in children.
Children usually require examination after dilatation of pupil and require to wear full prescription unlike adults.

Please provide me the prescription given by your doctor and reports if any so that I can review them and advice you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
