Having sex during menstrual period DOES NOT prolong the menstrual period.

Depending on the age of the woman there are several reasons for menstrual bleeding to be prolonged. Some common reasons are as below:

1. Fibroids which are benign smooth muscle tumors of uterus.
2. Adenomyosis, a condition in which epithelial lining of the uterus invades into the uterine muscle
3. Polyps
4. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding where there is no apparent cause found
5.Pelvic infections like Chlamydia, gonorrhea.
6. PCOD, underactive thyroid.

I hope I have answered your concern. If you have any further queries, do contact me through Healthcare magic.

Brief Answer:
See your Gynecologist for internal examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
From your notes it appears that you are having bleeding after sex. This is called postcoital bleeding.
What is your age? Is it the first time that you have this complaint?
In young women the reasons for bleeding after intercourse are often due to benign conditions like cervical polyp, cervicitis ( infection of the neck of the womb) cervical ectropion ( epithelium lining cervical canal protrudes out a bit) and cervical erosion ( Cervical epithelium replaced by thin columnar epithelium). Sometimes it is due to some serious conditions like precancerous lesion of the cervix.
Are you regular with your pap smears? Were they normal?
You must see your Gynecologist for internal examination. Your doctor in addition will do a pap smear if you are not regular with your screening. She may also advise colposcopy ( detailed examination of neck of uterus under special magnifying devise called colposcope) based on clinical examination.

I hope I have answered to your concerns.

Brief Answer:
Consult Gynecologist for internal examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Is the bleeding heavy? How many pads you are changing daily?

You see, you started bleeding after intercourse. So there is a possibility that it could be from the cervix due to cervical erosion, ectropion etc. The contraceptive pills that you took irregularly can also cause this bleeding.

I advise you to have internal examination to find out the cause for this bleeding. This will make things clear for us. Cervical ectropion, polyp, cervical erosion can easily by diagnosed by speculum examination. If you do not have these, then the bleeding is probably due to the pills you took. Just wait for a week or so and the bleeding will settle down. If the bleeding is heavy your doctor may write medicines to stop the bleeding.
This internal examination also gives an opportunity to take Pap smear if it is due.
I hope I have made things clear for you.
If you have any further queries do write to me.
