Does Hepatitis C Infection Cause Chronic Mesenteric Ischemia?
Question: Hello again, Thank-you so much for following up with me. Well as you know my primary care M.D sent me to an infectious disease M.D. he said he would not treat at this time and just wait. I disagree. I would also like to ask a question about my husband. He has not yet been tested for Hep C. He did however was just released from the hospital with a diagnoses of chronic Mesenteric Ischemia. He had a bowel resection in Dec. of 13 but this was never mentioned. How would hep c type 3a impact or cause this and what diet should he follow?

Chronic mesenteric ischemia has nothing to do with HCV caused liver disease. Please note that mesenteric ischemia is a disease caused by intestinal arteries narrowing due to atherosclerosis. In simple words, in the artery cholesterol is stored in the blood vessel wall. It constantly gets narrow and narrow. It gives abdominal pain due to intestines ischemia. It is very similar to heart disease (heart ischemia), just the location of narrowing is in the intestinal arteries.
This disease does not affect liver. So Hepatitis C also does not impact or cause mesenteric ischemia.
There is not special diet in case of intestines ischemia. Diet type has no impact to the pain and ischemia. It simply appears after most of foods.
He should have endovascular procedure to widen intestinal arteries. This should help with the pain.
