Does Intake Of Ox Bile Supplement And Questran Cause Fluctuating Levels In Liver?

Question: Hi there, I am a 40 year old woman. In pregnancy I got symptoms of acute gallstones resulting in removal when my son was born 16 years ago. I have had Ititis on and off for years. I am diagnosed with bile acid malabsorbtion and on questran for chronic bowel incontinence. I had a few funny turns this year and stroke was suspected and ruled out in A and E and had tests at the hospital resulting in a diagnosis of basilar brain stem migraine. All tests including liver were fine at the time.Between diagnosis for that I looked for reasons I might feel some of the symptoms and tried ox bile and 100 percent daily dose vitamins as the Internet says most people with no gallbladder need this to absorb their vitamins and feel normal. Could using ox bile and questran together cause odd liver function results...? I also take citalopram 40mg and have done for many years. I drink a bottle of wine most evenings which I know is too much. All tests in hospital before Xmas were fine. Am awaiting another liver test. In March my gt level was 228, alkaline 165, serum alt 61, this has dropped since the test before that which was higher. I am dreading the next blood test. Could my meds or the ox bile and high level vitamins and also migraleve have caused the sudden rise?

Brief Answer:
Possible recurrence of Gall stones? Need ERCP.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

I can certainly understand your concern.

I have worked through your query in detail.

Neither OX bile nor Questran are associated with abnormalities in LFT.

High levels of vitamins are also not associated with abnormalities as long as they are water soluble vitamins.

Migraleve and Citalopram can be associated with mild liver dysfunction, but doesn't always warrant drug discontinuation.

If possible it's advisable to reduce the the dose of vitamins and Migraleve.

The main reason which needs to evaluated for abnormalities in LFT in your case is recurrence of gall stones.

Gall stones can recur in the remaining bile ducts, even though gall bladder is removed.

For this, I advise you to get ERCP test for diagnosis and if necessary therapeutic intervention can be directly carried out via ERCP.

ERCP is an effective diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedure.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.
