Does Low Dose Birth Control Pill Increase The Risk Of Breast Cancer?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 May 2017
Question: Hello,

I am thinking on going on a very low dose of birth control to control my perimenopause symptoms such as heavy periods, hair loss, dry throat etc.. Is there more of a risk for breast cancer with taking a low dose birth control, to even out my hormonal imbalance, or more of a risk to have a hormonal imbalance concerning breast cancer? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Low dose hormonal pills can be used.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
In the perimenopausal age group the symptoms that you are having can be best controlled with a low dose hormonal pill. These do increase the predisposition to breast cancer to some extent but you can have detailed investigations under the guidance of your gynecologist and start the therapy if you are a suitable candidate- Not in the high risk group. To control these symptoms such pills are routinely used on a short term basis which is safe and does not increase the risk much.

Wouldn't hormonal imbalances and horrible perimenopausal symptoms also increase the risk of breast cancer? And how long is a good time for short term use? Would that straighten out the hormones or would all symptoms come back after stopping the pill?

Brief Answer:
Pills can be used for 4-6 cycles.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The hormonal imbalances and perimenopausal symptoms do not much increase the risk of cancer. The pills can be used for 4-6 cycles. it will straighten the hormonal imbalance to some extent and you will get relief for 10-12 months. After that the imbalance can return again.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Yes, for sure your answer is helpful!

Do you go back on the pills again if you find the return of the symptoms? Or is it best to just stay on them? Or are there more natural ways at that point to control the symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Starting with pills is best for you.

Detailed Answer:
Since you are having a heavy blood loss starting with the pills is a best option for now. Other natural supplements will not help you much. in case the symptoms return the pills can be restarted for few cycles.

And what reasons do some women have such difficult times with perimenopause? My main concern was a dryness and throat reflux that couldn't be solved by any ent so I thought the only other symptoms I've had have been hormonal so perhaps the perimenopausal symptoms are also responsible for my very uncomfortable throat!

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are genetically related.

Detailed Answer:
The symptoms of perimenopause are mostly genetically related. increasing the fluid intake can decrease the throat dryness and reflux to some extent.
