Does Oral Amoxil Cause Ototoxicity?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,
I am concerned that I may have ototoxicity from taking oral amoxil. I am currently going through a process of having a dental implant. I just completed a week of amoxil 500mg tid and my last day of being on these antibiotics I felt a fullness and fluffy feeling to both my ears.It reminded me of when I took the same antibiotic back in august when the tooth was actually removed and I felt the same feeling after completing the antibiotics.Looking back I have noticed a decline in my hearing by approx 10-15 percent from august to now.Today I had a doctor look in both ears and they were perfectly clear. I plan to get an official hearing test this next week.I have always had really good hearing, but there is a family history of deafness on both mother and fathers side.My mother had hearing aids in both her ears in her 20's. I am 53 yrs old no medical problems and I do not take any medications. I would appreciate your opinion.
Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
no ototoxicity-amoxicillin, requires otoscopy,audiometry

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. I would like to ask you few more details.

As per your details, your deafness could be due to

1.Tooth extraction can cause tempro mandibular joint derangement, where it leads to Eustachian tube dysfunction causing deafness- this is rare entity.

2. Aged onset deafness- Sensorineural deafness occurs due to cell loss, seen in senility.

As such Cap.Amoxicillin is a safe drug, will not cause any harm to vestibule (balance) or cochlea (hearing). It can be used liberally in otic infections.

I suggest you to consult an ENT surgeon and get detailed ENT examination, otoscopy, audiometry ( Eustachian tube block, type (conductive or sensorineural) and degree (mild or severe) of deafness). Treatment can be started according to the investigations.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
