Does Shingles Vaccination Cause Transmission Of The Vaccine Virus?
Question: I had to recently change my M.D. and the office had recommended that I get the Shingles vaccination since I am 67, a retired R.N.. However, I have been given conflicting information from the two M.D. offices. (former and current) re: the possibility of shedding the virus to elderly and young two weeks after receiving the vaccine. The pharmacist wouldn't even answer my question and referred me to the CDC. Though I am also a public health nurse I want the best practice guidelines since I take care of my mother99 and 96 in their respective LTC facilities.
Brief Answer:
Please get vaccinated
Detailed Answer:
Hello
I recommend my patients who are above 65 years of age to get Shingles vaccine as well.
Even though Shingles is a self limiting infection and usually does not cause much harm it is however seen to be much more problematic in adults even more so in elderly individuals. It is a safe vaccine.
It is true that transmission of the vaccine virus occurs but this is extremely rare and this fact should not prevent you from getting vaccinated.
I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
I wish you good health
Regards
Please get vaccinated
