Does Thyroid Medication Cause Heart Palpitations?
Emergency room consultation, blood thyroid hormone measurement, ECG
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,
I understand this could be very scary, especially with good thyroid hormone levels. However, I still think the feeling you are experiencing might not really be due to the drug. Since you have not had any recent increase in the dose of the thyroid drug, It might be rare to think this feeling is a side effect of the drug.
I suggest you be watchful to see how this feeling proceeds. It might be helpful to get a clinical review by your emergency care physician. Doing a chest X ray and an electrocardiogramme (ECG) to exclude an acute problem with the heart could be very helpful. Fluctuations in hormonal levels and other "stressors" could be have repercussions on the heart.
I suggest an emergency room consultation and to do an ECG, blood thyroid hormone levels and chest X ray if need be.
I think you need not stress so much.
Kind regards,
Dr Bain
