Experiencing Crusty Hard Mucus With Tiny Blood Built Up In Nostrils. What Am I Suffering From?

default
Posted on Sun, 18 Nov 2012
Question: I am bit embarrass to relate about my nasal problem, Several years(approximately 15 yrs onward), i've been experiencing crusty hard mucus with tiny blood built up in my nostrils, especially the left nose which is more prone. Very uncomfortably at times. The problem seem to be worse in the cold climate condition, the warmer the
climate i seem to be a lot better. Last yr., i had nose bleed by picking the left nose -- so horribly i felt so
panicky, it's the worse i have ever had these developing symptoms since last winter till now, even the summer
months of this yr was'nt so great. I think that i am getting worse from my constant nose blockage. Every
night sleep(mid september till now) i woke up at least 2-3 times with dry mucus and tiny blood blockage and with terribly headaches, as soon as i am unblock or move around to get my blood flowing, my headache goes
away. I think that nasal sprays ,neilmed remedies does'nt work for me, try them with no effect. My family doctor
is not helping in my aide, i need to have a professional advice to my nasal health issues. Thanx.

Hi,

Thanks for your query.

You may have got Atrophic or vasomotor rhinitis with all the medications you would have used these many years. You need a specific therapy and specialist therapy at this stage. The normal defense mechanism by the nasal hair to stop the foreign bodies, dust, pollen and germs is not functioning now.

The continuous production of the mucous from the nasal mucousa could probably be a result of non specific allergic inflammation. This inflammation might have resulted in chronic congestion in the nasal mucousa. As a defense mechanism to prevent irritation to the mucosa excess secretions are produced. These secretions over time may get dried and stick to the congested mucosa and lead to minor abrasions on removing them causing small bleeding points.

I suggest you to consult an ENT or Allergy specialist who can assess the intensity of the allergy and find the cause for it.There may be need for a test called AEC (Absolute eosinophil count) which will help to confirm the fact.

I can help you with temporary home remedies but this is not all. Since the medication will not help you anymore this may be tried without much damage.

Do take steam inhalations with Eucalyptus oil in it, this will soothen the mucosa and reduce the irritation and inflammation. A pinch of turmeric in a tumbler of milk taken every day morning will reduce the allergy. Black pepper is another best remedy for nasal congestion.Taking 2 to 4 baked black pepper seeds or inhaling fumes by burning them on fire will help you get rid of the congestion.

Hope I answered your query. Please do ask doubts , if any.

Hi Doc,

I appreciate your informative response to my nasal problem.

It's almost like i can't resist picking my nose the way it is so clogged up which feel so...uncomfortable. The real winter have'nt even yet started and i am feeling terrible with this nasal clogging, i am definitely worried that the worst is about to happen in the cold winter months. I tell you for years throughout winters i must have gone through 100's of bloody tissues, probably an average 6 - 10 per days. i know the symptom may be getting worst because throughout previous summers with respect to 2012 summer i did'nt feel bad at all, this summer is telling me that something is acting up. Going outside and breath in the fresh air makes me feel normal, staying inside is awful. Sometime i feel like there is swelling in my nose.
Just like to know if nasal problem like the one i am encountering brings on terrible
headaches?, sometime and if not lot, when i am focus into something, i tend to
feel much better. ALSO can humidifier help me and why does the warmer climate
makes me improved.

Personally, do you a referral from a family physician to see an ENT Specialist.
i'm from toronto, canada and my family doctor is suggest to take
nasal spray, like neilmed neti pot. I try neti pot once, has no effect whatsoever.
Does neosporin work for me?.

Thanx again!, XXXXXXX

Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

Yes, the condition you have can be sometimes associated with headaches due to congested turbinates in the nasal cavity.

Also you can use a humidifier, warmth helps by preventing irritation and there-by reducing the congestion.

Neosporin is an antibiotic and does not have much role in treating allergic conditions.

Please do ask you treating doctor to refer you to the best ENT specialist in your locality.I believe he/she would be the better person with knowledge of best amongst.

Wish you good health.
