Getting Severe Pain In Wrist Few Days Before Menstrual Cycle. Are They Related?
Premenstrual syndrome is a condition that result in physical , behavioural and psychological changes that can affect normal activity. It occurs during the part of the cycle that you are describing, medically it is called the luteal phase.
One of the more common physical complaints that can occur in females with this condition is joint pain like your daughter is experiencing.
Studies are still being conducted to determine the best way to treat this aspect of PMS.
At present , some of the following is suggested: (1) some of the pain is related to the release of a substance called prostagladin, if medication is taken 5 to 7 days when the period is due that suppresses prostagladin then there is reduction and should be associated with reduced pain. This would include medication such as ibuprofen, cataflam, mefenamic acid
(2) keep well hydrated
(3) using enough calcium- for her it would be 1200mg to 1500 mg a day, she may need a supplement
(4) if the pain is very severe despite the above, your family may want to discuse the use of oral contraception which is associated with a decrease in PMS symptoms
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
