Have Premature Baby. MRI Showed Atrophy. Will This Cause Cerebral Palsy?
Question: Our son was born at 26 weeks and is trached. He just had an MRI today and the doctor said it showed some atrophy. He is 14 months now (adjusted age 11 months). He said this is common in premature babies and only time will tell. Does this mean he is on a path to cerebral palsy?
Hi,
Welcome to XXXXXXX
Yes,your doctor is correct! This does happen in very small preemies.
It is difficult to say from MRI alone what will happen!
The best way is to clinically assess him with his Mile stones .
There are some physical and mental scores which your doctor will ask for at follow up.
Till then is your child following up the milestones as per corrected age?
Is there any spasticity?
Is the child on early intervention programme of physiotherapy ?
These will guide you for the prognosis.
Good luck
God bless
