Having Pain In Lower Back Around Kidney, Hurts To Walk And Have Shortness Of Breath. What's Going On?
Question: Hi, I had a sudden onset of pain in lower back (right side) around kidney area a few days ago - thought it may have been sleeping in odd position. It has recurred every morning and overnight. Today is much worse, hurts to walk, and have shortness of breath. Area is not painful to touch - not painful to breath, but movement aggravates it and I am slow because of it. Cannot lay flat in bed, have to be propped up. Heating pad helped.

The pain in the ‘kidney area’ may form the kidney! – a small stone for example. At times, one may not have urinary symptoms. An ultrasound scan may show.
More likely, it is muscular pain – aggravated by movement (walk) and helped by heat. At this age Lumbar spondylosis is the prime reason. Degeneration of inter-vertebral disc could irritate a nerve root – causing muscle spasm and pain. Examination by an Internist/Neurologist may show clues. MRI of the lower spine will be the best to rule in or rule out.
In the mean time, try paracetamol for pain relief. NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) are more powerful but they may affect the blood pressure and kidney – and hence best taken under medical supervision. Muscle relaxant also could help
