It does hurt to the touch now. The knot seems bigger on some days and smaller on other days. When it is smaller, it doesn't hurt. It never goes away completely.

It is most likely a 'ganglion cyst' that has arisen from the underlying tendon sheath. Ganglion cysts are benign and are derived from outpouching of synovial lining of nearby joints (mostly hand joints) or tendon sheaths. It need to be surgically excised. I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for the needful.
