Question: I have taken Xanazx2.0 , as a result of car wreck ending whichever traumatic scoliosis. I sever reactions of most muscle relaxation. So my physician found XXXXXXX hydrocodone, xanax, and generic promethazine. These medicines were necessary because with sever pain I vomited do to pain. These reactions were after the wreck and always ended in emergency room. Mtg blood pressure was 230+ over27 5+. These episodes happened in my 40s.My doctor at the time finely found these 4 prescription that slowed the episodes and finally I can take meds and take them to prevent these episodes. Now at 68 my new doctor (previous doctor retired) want to take all 4 meds to wean off completely. My injuries at 68 are the same with spondosis, scoliosis, spires of ones in lower spine cutting off felling to legs(this only last for less than a few minutes. My pain is no fake and I don't want start emergency trips let alone severe high blood pressure at 68. I only take my pres only in sever pain. What am I to do without pres to continue these sever episode to start up again. I have had some episodes but so far not as severe, but I am still staking in half doses and cannot start the severe episodes again. What can I do? I am allergic to all other muscle relaxers.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Xanax, XXXXXXX and hydrocodone are all controlled substances that are NEVER meant to be used for more than 6 months. Use longer than 6 months results in addiction, withdrawal, falls and hip fractures, delirium, memory loss, hyperalgesia (steady WORSENING of pain over a period of several years), and most importantly does not help with pain meaningfully in the long term. You absolutely need to taper off these medications. An evidence-based approach to chronic pain is a combination of regular physical therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a licensed therapist. This is the safest and most effective approach.
