Hello,
the appearance of herpes zoster starts with an erythematous area and macules, which progress to papules very fast. The papules turn into vesicles with clear fluid which later becomes turbid. Then the vesicles rupture and crusts may form. Here is a link to a picture with the characteristic lesions:
