How Is A Ovarian Cyst Biopsy Done. Is This Procedure Done By Numbing The Area?
Question: How is a ovarian cyst biopsy done in DR. office.Is this procedure done by numbing the area. Also how much pain is there and the amount of time it takes. Also do you have to worry about bleeding after procedure. A little worried was never told how this would be done.

As an OB/GYN with over 10 years of experience, and many occasions where abnormal findings on an ovary are seen on ultrasound, I have never once nor heard of anyone doing a biopsy of an ovary in the office setting. I am assuming that this is being done because of an abnormal finding seen on ultrasound.
If there is concern about cancer, then you need to be evaluated by a Gynecologic-Oncologist. If they do not think that this is cancer, but think that it needs to be evaluated, then you need to be taken to the operating room for a "laparoscopy". This is a procedure where you are asleep and a camera is put in throught the belly button. It simply does not sound safe or comfortable to do this in the office setting.
It sounds like you should get a second opinion before proceeding!

Hello I think the procedure is called a needle aspiration biopsy. I was wondering
if that would make a difference of having it done in an office. I was told to take CYTOTEC the night before the procedure.

Perhaps, but if this is involving your ovary, in most cases it would be addressed like this:
1. Original finding on ultrasound noted
2. If there was low concern about cancer, one option would be to repeat the ultrasound in 6-8 weeks
3. If the "finding" persisted or grew, then there would be a discussion about surgery
I believe that the appearance on ultrasound and how it behaves over time is as good as what they are proposing - but this is not medical advice. I am just saying that it does not sound like standard practice and you should get a second opinion before proceeding!
The cytotec is to make the cervix (which is part of the uterus) easier to dilate - if this is all not making sense, please clarify that this is not a "uterine" biopsy versus and ovarian biopsy.

Hello It is a ovarian biopsy.Had a pap smear came out fine. Also had a CA 125 came bk fine i have to have this done this morning Im quite nervous about this.are you saying it should not be done in office
Hello Im sorry you might be right saying uterine biopsy Dr. doesn't inform well started out ultrasound for ovarian cyst .after talking to you he did say uterine lining was 1.5 should should be 1.4. If that is what I'm having he didn't inform correctly so sorry about this never had medical problems before just worried. having it done today

If you don't think this is being explained well to you, then seek a second opinion. A uterine lining of 4mm or less does not need to be biopsied. If the lining is 1.5mm, then this does not need to be done. If it is 1.5 cm, then it is indicated.
My guess is he is referencing 14mm (or 1.4cm). In a PRE-MENOPAUSAL woman this is normal, but in a post-menopausal woman, it is abnormal.
If the doctor "does not inform well" then get a new one!!

2. Is there any concern about my ovaries?
