default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: My right ear has been stopped up for a week. Have seen NP at urgent care twice. She gave me chipper and Augmenton along with 2 antihistimines. She said my ear was bright red with blisters . After 1 week, I went to my PC provider and she said stop the antibiotics. Blisters were healing. Ear still stopped up. Miserable.
cipper should have been Cipro.

Brief Answer:
Not to worry,

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

Middle ear infection can take upto 6 weeks to resolve completely during which time you may have sensation of clogged ears. You may experience hearing loss and tinnitus also.

Do as your doctor suggests and you will be fine in a few days or a weeks time.

In the meanwhile you can use decongestant nose drops like otrivin. These drops help to keep the Eustachian tubes patent. The Eustachian tube connects the ears to the nose. Instill 3 drops in each nostril 3 times a day and follow it up with steam inhalation for 5 days. Also do plain steam inhalation also whenever you can find some time to spare. Drink plenty of fluids and keep yourself well hydrated. Avoid eating cold foods and air conditioning.

you can also do an exercise called valsalva, the details of which you can find on YouTube. If the ear hurts while doing the exercise then discontinue the exercise.

Keep your ears dry and do not probe your ears.

See your doctor again if you do not feel better in a few days time.

Feel free to follow up,
Regards,
