How Long Is Recovery From A Femur Fracture?
This question is to an orthopaedic surgeon. On 1st July , my mother who is 62 years of age broke her femur bone right above the thigh after she met with an accident.
She got operated the next day with plates and screws implanted. We have been reviewing with our doctor here and its been almost more than 2 months since the surgery.Plate union is in progress and ankle movement is full according to xray report.
How much time does it take the patient to fully recover?
She is using a knee cap over crepe bandage. Can she remove the knee cap occasionaly for her excercise or while sleeping?
She now walks with the help of a walker. What is the benefit of the same.
After the surgery , she is suffering from hair loss.Is it common after surgery and can you suggest some medicines for stoping hair loss.
Regards
2-3 months are needed for healing.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
In case of fracture of femur at her age even after a surgical fixation it takes 2-3 months for proper bone healing. After that physiotherapy is needed to regain the proper joint movements.
She can remove the knee cap during rest but not during exercise. Use an elastic knee cap during day time and exercise for a good support to the knee.
Walker allows the partial weight bearing on the fracture site. This helps in bone healing.
The hair loss after surgery is due to weakness and poor nutrition. She needs proper multivitamin and folate supplements and a high protein diet to regain her hairs.
I hope this answers your query.
