How Serious Is Aortic Stenosis?

depends on degree of stenosis and symptoms
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Aortic stenosis refers to narrowing of the aortic valve.
The aortic valve is the valve through which blood from the left side of the heart goes into aorta to supply the rest of the body.
It is not uncommon as persons age for the valve to become stenotic. This is due to fibrosis (scar formation) and thickening of the valves.
If the stenosis is mild like yours, there may be no symptoms and no complications due to the stenosis.
On average the valve area may decrease by 0.12cm2 per year but this can vary widely from one person to the next.
It is even possible to be asymptomatic (no symptoms) with severe aortic stenosis. Asymptomatic patients with severe stenosis have a expected death rate of less than 1% a year. (this means that 1 out of 100 persons with severe stenosis who have minimal symptoms may die due to stenosis).
Some persons do have symptoms and the mortality rate would be higher for those persons.
If your aortic stenosis is mild and there are no or minimal symptoms then the prognosis is good.
Symptoms that can occur are chest pain, shortness of breath, difficulty lying flat, syncope (fainting).
Summary: (1)good prognosis if mild with no symptoms
(2)there are persons with severe stenosis with no symptoms- mortality less than 1 %
(3)if symptoms present in moderate or severe stenosis then mortalilty higher, may be 25%
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any additional questions
